| -WHAT IS A CROWN? A crown is a restoration that reconstructs the visible part of a tooth. Underneath a crown is the actual tooth that has been previously shaped and contoured to accept a crown over it. The illustration on the right shows a crown and the reduction that needs to be made to the actual tooth. Crowns are needed for the following reasons among others: -esthetic improvement -after a root canal & post build-up -can no longer support a simple filling -wasted teeth due to excessive grinding -WHAT DOES THE CROWN PROCESS INVOLVE? Your natural tooth will need to be "prepped" in order for the crown to fit over your tooth. The prepping process is a slight reduction to the tooth that is done under local novacaine. An impression of your tooth is taken and is sent to the dental lab for the fabrication of your permanent crown. Meanwhile, a temporary crown is placed over your prepped tooth. |
