IMPLANTS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?
Dental implants are titanium made screws placed directly into the jawbone to hold a crown, bridge or denture.  Titanium is used because it is very strong yet lightweight.  It also has the capability of forming a bond with surrounding human bone; thus titanium is widely used in other areas of the body like in hip and knee surgeries.  Over the implant goes the abutment, and over the abutment goes the prosthesis.

-WHAT STEPS ARE INVOLVED IN THE DENTAL IMPLANTS PROCESS?
The dental implant process is divided into three steps.  The first step is the initial implant placement.  A titanium screw is surgically placed into the bone where the implant is designated to be placed.  A process known as osseointegration, which is the fusion between the titanium implant screw and the human jaw bone will need to happen.  Osseointegration takes 6 months to complete and the implant is left undisturbed for this period before the second step can be accomplished.  The second step is placing the abutment over the implant.  The abutment connects the tooth or denture to the implant.  The third step is to place the prosthesis.  As you can see the implant procedure takes 6 months to complete from start to finish.
-ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL STEPS INVOLVED IN THE DENTAL IMPLANTS PROCESS?
Additional procedures may include the following:
-
Bone Augmentation:  this procedure is performed when there is not enough bone to hold an implant, bone is placed.
-
Sinus Lift:  this procedure is performed when the sinus is too low preventing the placement of an implant, thus the sinus is raised.

-WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Of course, only an in-office consultation will help us answer this question.  But the greatest candidates have very good hygiene, excellent periodontal health and enough bone to support an implant.  Dental implants can enhance the quality of life for many people, but they are not for everyone.  In general the success rate is 97%, with the highest percentage in those placed in the lower front of the jaw.  The success rate dramatically decreases if you suffer from the following illness:
-heart disease
-diabetes
-osteoporosis
-radiation of the head and neck
-periodontitis
All patients need to be evaluated on an individual basis as exceptions do exist.

-WHO PLACES THE IMPLANT?
All implants are placed by our maxillofacial surgeon Dr Esteban Ramirez (
www.maxillosurgeon.com).  The implant portion placed by Dr. Ramirez is done at his oral surgery clinic located 2 miles from ours.  We provide transportation to and from his clinic to ours.

-WHO PLACES THE TOOTH THAT GOES ON THE IMPLANT?
Dr. Billy Bartell Jr. places the tooth that goes on the implant.

-WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT ON YOUR FIRST IMPLANT EVALUATION APPOINTMENT?
On your first appointment regarding implants you should expect to meet our oral surgeon Dr. Esteban Ramirez and Dr. Billy Bartell Jr. and discuss your case.  Study model impressions will be taken of your mouth in order to better evaluate your case.  Also, a panoramic x-ray will need to be performed on you to see several structures that may or may not interfere with the implant process.  They include the position of your sinus, nerves and arteries that run along your jawbone.  We do not want implants to damage any of these areas..  This is the reason for the panoramic x-ray.  It is done at a local x-ray diagnostic center and we provide transportation.  An example of a panoramic x-ray is shown immediately below.
Panoramic X-ray = $30dlls.
